BSC team rider Dave Winchester will be competing in the upcoming BSC Pro being held at Avalon beach on the 17th – 19th July. Wingy will no doubt be looking for another victory to chase down tour leader Mitch Rawlins and better his chance of an Aussie Tour Title. Here is a recent interview to find out what’s going on inside the mans head. It seems to me that you are keener than ever when there are waves around, do you feel you are and is there anything in particular that is driving you?
Im way keener now than
ever, before I had coco I could surf whenever I wanted, now my time is
a touch more limited, so surfing when the waves are good are my main
priority. My family is the most motivating thing in my life.
If some groms out there
were to say that they think your career is over, what would you say to
them?
Get back on tour,
dominate. Get some good shots, keen to do some airs. NMD, Bodyboarders Surf Co, Grand Flavour, Peak, Stealth

Human SIC Final Day..Ben Player Wins
With time running out in the waiting period and no swell on the horizon contest organizers were forced in running the final days rounds . Blue sky, sunny conditions, great sponsors and the worlds best bodyboarders ..the only thing missing is waves. 1 to 2ft at best and direct south so don't expect any of the type of barrels that SI is famous for. Conditions should have improved throughout the afternoon with the incoming tide but by the final it was horrible. Day 2 was held in the worst waves ever in the events history. In the final Ben Player did enough to win just edging out on his last wave Ryan Hardy who was in great form . The only non Aussie in the event was Mark McCarthy from South Africa who was consistently pulling big moves throughout the contest but couldn't find the right waves In 4th place was local NF Aus team rider Shark Island ripper John Showell .It was a disappointing end due to the lack of waves , to what is Australia's Premiere event ....there's always next year. 1st Ben Player (Aus) 2nd..Ryan Hardy (Aus) 3rd...Mark McCarthy (South Africa) 4th John Showell (Cronulla, Aus) Equal 5th Jonathan Vega (Canary Islands) and Max Arent (AUS) Equal seventh was Mike Stewart (Hawaii) & Oliver Hererra (Canary Islands)

Dallas Interview Dallas Singer will be competing in the upcoming BSC Avalon Pro on the 17th – 19th July at Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. With the Shark Island Challenge waiting period being from the 1st – 20th July, it is sure to be a busy month for Dallas. Here is a quick interview on what he’s been up to lately. Give us a quick run down on what you've been up to the last month or two, bodyboarding related or not: righto the last month or two.... ive picked up a few new sponsors this year which has been ace, firstly being BSC, which has been sick so far, all the team are mad guys and the staff at both the narra and qld stores are legends also. I recently sign with dunes wetsuits, who have kept me warm so far this winter, especially on a trip i did to victoria a week back., im loving the suits and the new colours have done wonders to my appearance in the water. Finally, i just done a deal with Todd and Dav at I AM NONE clothing. their clothing is really top notch, they take pride in everything they do and their product reflects that. Also being an aspiring graphic designer i feel as thou i'm learning from them as much as i'm promoting their clothing. Apart from selling myself off the bodyboard industry ive been surfing how i want to, ive been surfing waves that i enjoy most and with the people who make me a better rider. I always try and have fun whenever i bodyboard, thats why i started and thats why ill continue to do it. Who do you think has been ripping lately? gezz soo many people. On a recent trip i did with a bloke named Chris James, he really impressed me. He really is a stand out rider, well balanced in all conditions and an absolute hell man in the big sucky stuff. Apart from that i love the way Bp is riding, Buntos and novy both shred the bag also. oh shit im starting to froth out a bit huh, i better leave it at that. You seem to be one of the new gen riders that is pushing the limits and putting your own variation to moves in the air. Do you see yourself as someone that is leading the pack or trying to keep up? ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm, how bout keeping up to lead the pack? is that an honest answer? i dunno, i just love the versitility of bodyboarding. and if riders cant see that, their usually going to be the ones trying to keep up. Do you have any special combos you bust out especially for the competition arena? I’ve got ideas flying through my head everyday in terms of what can be done on a bodyboard. but yeah i love to think ill be able to start landing a legit new move by the end of the year, something i can call my own. I gave you no info at all their didnt i? and i didnt really answer your question either..hahahaha. Do you try and get your self in a certain frame of mind when competing? Any tips you can give all the aspiring groms out there? Competing in anything is stressful you cant help that, if you dont get nervous before a contest either you dont want to win or you dont want to be there. i always just think about how mad this sport is and why i love doing it so much while im competing, that usually calms me down a bit, then i try to surf how i would any other day. Just good clean surfing, thats what people and judges want to see. It seems that Europeans and South Americans are becoming more and more prominent in bodyboarding, do you think they are slowly stealing the limelight away from Aussie bodyboarders? If so, what do you think of it? Depends where the 'limelight' is coming from, I still believe every aussie grom would still see our riders as being the best in the world. The euro and sth american push has had alot to do with the IBA world tour, but the tour doesnt get that much publicity anywhere still. And until it does riders such as Uri and Magno will go nearly unknown to kids here in Aus. They do deserve their praise thou, some amazing competitors have come out of these counties lately. Finally, who looks after you for equipment in and out of the water? B S C beeee-atch and dont you forget!

Johnny and Brendan W.A.’s Brendon Backshall has been over at Manta HQ working on his new rides and is stoked with the way his new stock boards are looking. “I am so happy with the look and feel of my new boards. Reon (Manta shaper) and I worked on getting a nice clean template for all conditions and it has been working great.” Brendon timed his trip to the East Coast well and has been scoring all over the South Coast, linking up with video lens man Todd Barnes for his upcoming feature film “Thrash”. Cronulla’s Johnny Showell is also amping on his new boards. “I have been training hard for this year’s Shark Island contest and with the new CCT core in my boards, it works great for flex and speed out the Island. Fingers crossed we get a good swell during the waiting period.” Tommy Smith, fresh back from a trip to South Oz with 2x World Champ Damian King, is determined on qualifying for this years Shark Island contest. “Everything feels right at the moment. My boards and equipment are working well, I feel fit and like my surfing is at the top of it’s game.” With determination like this and the skill level of Tommy’s riding, he is a near certainty to qualify. Manta’s new 08/09 boards are avaliable in all good surf retailers now. For more go to www.manta.com.au Manta Surf Co.
