THE 2009 USBA GRAND SLAM CHAMPSIONSHIP TOUR
11/24/2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

With the end of the 2008 USBA season, tour organizers and the USBA
riders board members have accessed the successful 08. The USBA board with
much deliberation has come to the decision to follow a new format being
used by the IBA (International Bodyboarding Association) its umbrella
organization. The new format dubbed "Grand Slam Tour" will allow both
USBA and IBA athletes to compete at large venues both abroad and in the US
with less travel time/cost holding greater impact at each of it's
prestigious events.
The "Grand Slam" model has been adapted from several high profile
sports including Tennis and Golf. The USBA Grand Slam 2009 will work
towards stimulating the growth of the sport whilst maintaining a realistic
pace for competitors schedule chasing the National/World Titles. By
focusing on three major events in the US the USBA tour will have the
opportunity to concentrate all it's efforts into these venues bringing a
higher value to both the athlete and sponsor through larger media and
onsite presence at the nations premier Bodyboarding venues (Huntington
Beach Pro,Sandy Beach Pro and the Jenkinson's Pro). All three major Grand
Slam events will be held during the summer months to maximize media
exposure and also make it feasible for Amateur athletes to meet the travel
requirements.
Along with this new schedule will come a slightly new point schedule,
prize purse break down and requirements for our regional events!
Definition:
Grand Slam event: A large-scale event, 1 per US region totaling 3
Grand Slams per year. This event counts as 1000 points on the USBA tour
and a rider must compete in all three events to have a legitimate shot at
the US national title. A Grand Slam is run via the USBA with no outside
organization
Regional Event: Is a smaller scale events ran either by the USBA or
sanctioned event organizers. All events count for 500 points on the
national tour and 1000 points for CA, East Coast and Hawaii regional title
tours simultaneously. Currently there are 6-scheduled regional event for
09 seasons to be held in NY, Fl, HI and CA in 2009!
A total of four events will count for the year, which means a rider must
do one regional event per year to get his fourth counting event with a
maximum of 3,500 points total for a USBA Grand Slam season!
Note: A 2009 schedule of events is attached to this email. All dates are
tentative and will be confirmed by the USBA's first scheduled event the
dual sanctioned IBA/USBA Pipeline Pro!

THE BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS USBA
TOUR
Presents
THE 2008 SCION NYBB PRO
Presented By: Verizon Wireless
SPONSORS: SCION, BODYGLOVE BODYBOARDS, MARRIOTT HOTEL & VERIZON WIRELESS
Amateur tour sponsor:
EASTCOASTBODYOARDS.COM

The final day of the 2008 SCION
NYBB Pro Presented by Verizon Wireless was nothing short of an amazing
event. Mother Nature was the events best friend today as tropical storm
Hana had moved off the coast of NY providing swell and offshore/cross
shore winds for the first round of the Men's Pro.
Starting off the contest
was a focused Jeremy Wright who progressed through his heat with ease,
along with a Puerto Rico's Jorge Colomar. In heat two of round one Jason
Bitzer seemed to have a field day with the solid conditions linking a
barrel to roll to barrel combo and a solid invert to back up his first
wave for the win. Miguel Ochoa of Long Island did his home town proud
placing second to an on fire Jeff Hubbard who was keeping the level of
surfing high through the event. An upset went down with three Californian
riders going down in round one. Rusty Friesen, Ray Machado and Justin
Crossman all could not find their rhythm and were sent back to NYC to
enjoy the rest of their vacations. Willy Petrovick (HI), David Phillps
(HI), Sean Kircher (NY) and Brian Stoehr (MD) all put together solid
performances pushing them through to the quarter final round. Hawaiian
hero Jonah Romero was not as fortunate and was left on the beach to watch
his brother Jacob advance into the next round.

In quarters the local talent had
started to loss their steam after great first round efforts. Names such as
former East Coast Champ John Heyman and famous photographer Matt Clack
along with local charger Tim Seif (all from Long Island), where taken down
along with NJ talent Ryan Wade.
Just prior to the Semi final heats
the winds had shifted more west making the offshore conditions more
textured and difficult to read. This left riders like Jason Bitzer( NJ/HI),
Miguel Ochoa (NY),Sean Kricher (NY) and Brian Stoehr (MD) off their game.
Jason and Brian finished 3rd and 4th in their heats
respectively, both not finding the second score they needed to advance.
Miguel Ochoa had put in a solid run
of maneuvers with dual rolls on a set wave but it was not enough to oust
Jeff Hubbard and Jacob Romero of Hawaii. Placing 4th in the
Semi Finals was Sean Kricher who after having a great event thus far
seemed to fall victim to the wrong place wrong time syndrome that comes
part and parcel with wave selection and contests.
The all Hawaiian final
was an all out slug fest, with Willy Petrovick striking the first blow in
the form of an ARS to Roll/Spin combo. It took riders ten minutes to
counter Willy's first nailed attempt and it was Jeff Hubbard's "Gorf"
(inverted air forward spin) that put him on the board behind Willy's
stronger first wave. David Phillips soon after answered with a cleanly
rotated air reverse followed by a back up wave of ARS to Roll. Willy again
put together an ARS to Roll combo that had him in the lead with two
similar scores for both his waves. Jeff still needing a back up score was
in tricky position as the time winded down. David Phillips found a smaller
but clean faced wave to find his back up score with an ARS to Roll which
had him in close proximity of Willy's top two. In the final two minutes of
the final Jeff Hubbard snagged a medium size left set wave which he tore
to shreds from his first bottom turn. It was an ARS (Air Roll Spin), spin
to roll to spin combination that set him up for his second consecutive win
at the SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon Wireless.

With the results tallied
it was Jeff who lead the webcast out as the winner thanking the USBA
sponsors such as SCION, Bodyglove Bodyboards, Verizon Wireless and
Eastcoastbodyboards.com for the support over the past 4 years along. The
USBA signed off the webcast with a shot of Jeff calling his wife heather
to inform him of the win while young fans lined up for his signature!
This was another great year for an
amazing event and The USBA would like to thank SCION and Verizon Wireless
for making it possible again in 2008.

Day one of competition at The SCION NYBB Pro presented by Verizon
Wireless saw overcast conditions and a fog layer line the sky. This had
left organizers scared of possible rains of low visibility heading into
the Drop Knee Pro and Amateur rounds.

As the morning hours rolled on the fog rolled out and provided a fun
2-3ft-background swell from Ike and Hanna (Hurricanes) that the Amateurs
and Drop Knee USBA Pros took apart. The normal standouts progressed
through the drop knee rounds with Willy Petrovick (HI) finding his stride
as he worked his way to the final. Willy also had a strong presence in the
Stand Up division, which was comprised of the most competitive field seen
yet outside of USBA Hawaii events. Brian Stoehr and Jeff Hubbard came up
with strong performances in the semi finals that had them once again make
the NYBB Pro Drop Knee final for the 3rd year in a row. Jacob Romero was
able to keep it consistent landing him in his second Drop Knee final of
the year. In the finals of the DK Pro it was a hard snapping Jeff Hubbard
who ousted fellow Hawaiian Willy Pertrovick for the win. Following their
solid performances was Brian Stoehr who made his second appearance in the
finals during the past two northeast USBA events. Jacob Romero who was on
the ball through out the day could not keep his rhythm in the final and
settled for forth place at days end.

Heading into the Open Amateur heats there was a few new NY faces that
caught the eye of the judges today. Dave Fava and Nick Andosca where
amongst a crew of NY riders that where making a push into the later
rounds. It was much of the same into the 13-18 Amateur divisions with a
strong NY presence. However it was New Jersey's Dilan Druz along with
Kauai's Travis Smith who led the entire field all the way to the finals.
In the Finals of the Open Am it was Travis Smith (Kauai HI), Dilan Druz (NJ),
Miguel Ochoa (NY) and Brian Vitalo (NY) in that order first to forth, all
of which put on a show from heat start to finish.
The 13-18 divisions was just as competitive if not more so then the
Open Amateur division and once again it was Travis Smith who took out
Dilan Druz the current US Amateur Champion in the final by a small margin.
Following the two top seeded riders it was Billy Murphy (NJ) and Pat
Camden (NY) who rounded out the competitive division. With only two more
events on tour it will be a close race between our two top contenders
Dilan Druz and Travis Smith for the USBA Amateur National title in 2008.
With Saturday looking to have sub par weather and surfing conditions
organizers have opted to resume competition the final day of the waiting
period on Sunday in hopes to catch the swell forecast to arrive tomorrow
onward with very solid swell headed our way!

hype.
