“The
Grand Finale”
It was back to D’bah
for our final comp for the year after spending and eventful week at
Port Mac, where a number of our Club riders took out Finals. Tom
Rigby was the standout for the week, taking out the Port Mac Pro
in fine style. Adam Rose took out the DK Pro event,
Dane (Poppy) Pope the Nationals DK title and Thorpe Waluew
the National Groms title. Congratulations to you all and also
to all Queensland competitors who attended Nationals. You all put
Queensland on the map as far as competition Bodyboarding goes.
There was an air of
excitement for our final comp and everyone was amped to do their best in
an effort to take out the title of Club Champion in their
respective divisions. But there was even more excitement to come with
some very special guests in attendance.
The Grand Masters
had dusted off boards and fins to show Gen Y how it is done and they
did not disappoint the milling crowd. The big names were out there and
went something like this.

Mel Rigby
(Tom’s Dad) - 5th place 1983 Coolangatta
Bodyboard Classic.
Trevor Ross
(Aussie Sports Images photog and supporter of GCBC) –
First man to EVER pull off a full spin.
Allan McFarlane
(Tom’s Dad) – Man who has dated Madonna.
Bret McAskill
(Dylan’s Dad) – The only man ever to kill a great white
with his bare hands.
These guys went all out
with perfect 10’s scored by Mel Rigby and Bret McAskill
showing the crowd that they can still visit the Green Room. We
hope to see you back more frequently next year as the spectators were
animated through your performance. Well done.
The excitement gained
momentum through the day when the tide went out to give us some beach for
a Fin race. It was on for young and old as they lined up to sprint
the beach to the finish line with fins a blazing!! We did give little
Jack a 5 metre start but he was right there at the end milling it up with
the big guys. Well done to all and also to our winner, Jacob Hough,
who walked away with a sweet pair of Limited Edition, fins donated by
BSC Coolangatta.

Preso Night plans are
set in stone for November 8th @ Calypso Tavern where all
Club Champions will be announced and also the winner of the Trip
to Hawaii, sponsored by BSC Coolangatta. Further details will
be emailed to all members within the next week but keep the date free for
a look back on a successful year for GCBC and more.
We will also be sending
details and dates of our AGM very shortly and hope to see all
members and parents there to add their input into the club that is run for
them. So stay tuned.
Special Award
gift vouchers from BSC Coolangatta were awarded
to:-
Kev Gil – Wipe Out
of the day - Judges and crowd decision – it was
Awesome. Hope your OK Kev? You accepted your gift voucher so I
guess you are just fine.
Mel Rigby – Grand
Masters Winner – Not sure if your board
modifications are legal but the scrutineers will be on sight for the first
round next year.
Dave – BBQ Chef
Extraordinaire – with limited amenities Dave
managed to feed the multitudes in fine style along with our usual little
helper Jack. Thanks heaps guys cos without your help our club
would not be what it is today.

WBA Sundowner Tiona event
This event was the best yet!
Sundowner Tiona, at Pacific Palms, played host to WBA's event no.3 on the
weekend of June 21st.
The venue to say the least was awesome!!
The girls were put up in the Beach House which accomodated all of us with
plenty of room to spare. We had the luxury of the beach just a few steps
away from our door, and on the other side was a beautiful lake.
Friday night the girls arrived, everyone hung out and enjoyed a BBQ dinner
followed by a movie in Sundowner's cinema room, the choice of DVD was
Family Guy; hilarious.
The next morning, everyone was up bright and early for our 7am big brekkie
that was kindly organised for us. Cereal, juice and bacon & egg breakfast
rolls all round, yum.
After all the rain and wild weather in the days leading up to the event,
we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day, with crisp clear skies, and a
smooth groomed swell.
North Boomerang was producing clean 3ft wedgey peaks and became the
nominated beach for the event. The girls were frothing for a surf, so
straight out there were the AAA girls.
Emma Roby paddled into a tasty peak immediately after the hooter sounded,
and executed a carving reverse, then into a solid looping roll, an 8 point
ride setting the standard early on. Unfortuantely, Roby waited and waited
for another decent wave but nothing like her first wave eventuated.
Kaitlin Murphy was as usual whipping into some textbook perfect spins,
super clean reverses, and clean rolls.
Nicole Fleming hung back a little, waiting for the wider sets, but just
couldn't find a decent ride, only lucking into one half decent ride, a
cute little tube.
Lilly Pollard showed skill and consistency throughout the heat and nearly
pulled a big ARS but got engulfed by whitewash on the landing. The winning
rides were a solid barrel and a roll on set waves.
AA girls headed out soon after.
Zoe Edwards and Karleah Lang set the pace, with both catching some good
shaped sets.
Karleah found some good open face to carve on, while Zoe completed some
really critical spins that the judges were stoked on.
The super grom of the event, Taylor Jackson, found a few fun waves on the
inside to charge on and Ali Kriz joined her in the fun, even managing some
nice looking spins of her own.
The much anticipated flipper race proved to be full of canarge at this
event.
At the start, Karleah and Zoe collided, the result of which left Zoe
grounded while the other girls raced on to the finish line.
Ali Kriz galloped to victory, claiming the coveted pair of Propel fins as
a prize.
Meanwhile, Zoe was claiming foul play and was sporting a bloody gash in
her mouth. The slow-mo replay on the video camera revealed that Zoe
tripped into Karleah's pointy elbow.
The girls finished the glorious day with a freesurf out the front of
Sundowner Tiona, where they were joined by hundreds of playful dolphins.
The presentation dinner was awesome, with lots of yummy nibblies and
everyone was able to look at the photos from the day.
Hooda, Manta, Turbo and Sundowner gave away some wicked prizes for the
finalists, and the raffle.
The winners of each division scored themselves an awesome custom made
Hooda jumper, you're mad not to check them out at www.hooda.com.au
Erinn from Sundowner took home the grand prize of the raffle which was the
Manta Mist bodyboard. Erinn was super stoked.
Sundowner also donated the ultimate prize to the WBA girls -a 5 berth
accommodation for the WBA girls to use at Sundowner Port Maquarie during
the National titles! Sweet.
Sunday morning the girls headed down to the Sundowner Conference room for
the yoga session and womens empowerment workshop. Everyone felt fresh and
rejuvinated afterwards and headed home.
A huge thankyou to Erinn Fergusson and Simon Luke from Sundowner. Also to
Clayton Pickworth and John Pollard for helping out on the day, and to all
the girls for their support and making the events so much fun!!!
Thanks to our sponsors TURBO, MANTA, SUNDOWNER, NO CLONES AND HOODA for
their support.

Maroubra Bodyboarders Round 3
Event #3 for the year was held in 3ft waves, with a gusty westerly making
things interesting for competitors. Bigger swells had played with the
outer banks, so waves were coming in a little fat before hitting the
inside and wrapping into some hittable sections.
Riders that managed to pick off the right ones were served up some decent
ramps, with very few wasted! Some big moves were being thrown around,
putting on a great little show for all the local folk having breakfast at
the café.
Results were as follows:
